The knee is a complicated joint and a lot can go wrong. Common injuries to the knee include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, and patellofemoral syndrome.
Your ACL connects the thigh bone to the shin bone.This injury frequently happens when you stop suddenly or change direction while landing. Skiers and those who play basketball, soccer, and football are most vulnerable.
An ACL injury can be quite painful, though mild sprains or tears may heal with just rest and rehabilitation exercises. More severe cases may require surgery.
Patellofemoral syndrome occurs when you repeatedly move your knee. Sports that require a lot of running and jumping put you at risk of this condition that can make it painful to go up and down stairs or squat. Rest, ice, and physical therapy usually help resolve the pain.
Epicondylitis, or tennis elbow, is caused by repetitive movement of the elbow. Usually the pain occurs on the outside of your arm, where your forearm meets your elbow.
Tennis elbow pain is due to small tears that form in the muscles and tendons at the joint. This leads to inflammation and pain. You may find it’s painful to lift and grip things.
Without treatment, the pain will persist. Rest, over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, corticosteroid injections, and bracing will help you find relief.
